I would LOVE to say this is the first time we’ve had to deal with the “S” word (suspended) but it’s not!  Earlier in the year I received a call from the school principal telling me that my child was suspended.  I wasn’t prepared for this one…I’m a good mom…my kids are nice and sweet and well behaved!  How is it that today I received my second call this year telling me that my son was suspended for slapping another child.

As a mom I feel like a complete a total failure!  I want to feel sorry for the child he hurt, I really do – but all I can do is be angry at my child for not making better choices.  Why did he have to slap another child?  Where did he slap him?  On the hand?  The face?  The back?  Does it really matter?  He laid a hand on another child out of anger, that’s not acceptable!

As he graduates 4th grade with straight A’s and on the Principal’s List (at least he was before this incident – the verdict is still out on whether that will still be the case after this incident) I wonder when he’ll finally get it?  When will he learn to control his temper?  Will he?  What happens when he’s 14, 15, or 20 and he gets angry?  Will he think before he reacts?  Or will he hit the person who angers him?

How do you punish a pre-teen for being suspended on the last day of school?  Technically he was suspended 2 days because today he left at 11am and the principal asked that he not come tomorrow for the last day.  Is that fair punishment?  Who does it really punish?  The student or the parent who has to take off another day of work to deal with this?  I try to defend myself and my child by asking “Why can’t the teachers engage the kids for ONE MORE DAY!!!”  Instead….they watch movies for the final day of school, because that’s useful, right?  Not all kids thrive on free-time!

The many emotions that go through a moms mind as she’s dealing with suspension….

Punishment?  Oh, yes he’s been punished!  Here are just a few of the repercussions he’ll have to face!

  • No rewards for his Principal’s List achievement!  We promised that if he made Principal’s List he’d get a computer edition of Minecraft to play.  This has been revoked!
  • Daddy was going to give him a $50 gift certificate for completing the year without getting in trouble and for good grades!  This has been revoked!
  • Cell phone (which only had wi-fi access anyways) privileges have been revoked!
  • End of year family movie date has been changed!  Now only Mommy and sister are going!
  • Daddy and son golfing?  Suspended until you can prove you deserve the reward!
  • Cleaning of the pantry – yep!  You have to clean and organize the pantry!  That includes all of the nasty little bitty spiders that scare you!  Mommy is done with the dirty work – it’s your turn!
  • Poopy duty!  That’s right, you are now responsible for cleaning up the doggy poopy from the backyard!  In the heat of the summer the dog poop stinks to high heavens and you have to clean it up 2 times a week!
  • No TV, no computer, no DS, no ANYTHING!!! I’m DONE with giving you things that you don’t appreciate!  Earn them back by being nice to others!
  • Worst punishment of all – he has to rat himself out to his karate instructor!  The instructor is usually worse on him than we are!  Last time he had to do 46 push-ups and was in tears.

How would you react if your child was suspended from school?  What type of punishment would you give out?  How would you as a parent react?

Me?  I’m finishing off a bottle of wine and dealing with it all tomorrow!  Today I drink – tomorrow I deal!
